![]() ![]() Overall, I would probably give this particular book a rating of about 4.3 but its place as part of the series has meant that I have erred on the side of generosity to scrape it in with the full 5 star rating. This always was going to be a military space opera and the central character, Kyle Roberts is likeable, flawed but knows he could be better and generally gets things right by finding solutions to seemingly dire situations. A minority of reviewers have said that the characterisations are weak but I didn't notice that and those people that the author wanted us to focus upon seemed to be expanded to a suitable level. This one was a bit darker than the previous two episodes but lightened by a love story percolating in the background. ![]() The saga continues with this third book in the series and I have to confess that I am pretty much gripped by now. This 3rd instalment is by far the best in the series so far and is worth reading the entire series for, as it is an exceptionally brilliant book based around some of the best starship combat to date. The dialogue between the characters has developed with each novel, getting stronger, more realistic still with a good degree of humour which has been one of the highlights of this series, but tempered with a very real understanding of the life and death situations they are facing. Stewart must have spent hours planning the fine detail of the battles and laying out the very ships to have been able to describe these battles with such intricate detail.Īs with the 2nd story, the characters continue to grow, gaining more depth, Kyle now having relationships with not just his estranged ex-partner and son, but now a real partner. The other thing with Stewart’s books is that he doesn’t just take out the side-kicks or the redshirts, main characters die as well, so you never know what is going to happen, increasing the tension of the story.Īdded to that is the detailed strategy and tactics, not just detailed in the telling of the story, but discussed by the characters on both sides, giving you a unique perspective of the battle field as these incredible conflicts unfold with such exquisite detail. ![]() It is not just the descriptions of the actual battles, the technical details and the incredible accounts of missile by missile strikes, it is the characters, their input and reactions, the sheer tension he generates as fighters and capital ships launch thousands of missiles in a desperate struggle to survive. This book has some of the best space battles not just of this series, but of a lot of series that I have read. Kyle is sent on a daring mission, whilst the newly created 7th Fleet is sent deep into Terran territory to take out their shipping. Kyle Roberts is finally put to the test in this book, as the Alliance decide to strike back, going on the offensive, they suddenly find that they have been pulled into an interesting situation, a chance to end Terran control of the Sector, but also the chance for the Terran’s to cause some major damage. This was an incredibly intense book, one that once you get into, you find that you have a hard time actually putting down with all the amazing battles, and the effect of certain outcomes.
